What You Should Know About Solar Powered Security Light

By Home Security Editor

There are many additional benefits to using solar powered security lights, as this article explains ...

One of the best things about a solar powered security light is that you won’t need a permit for underground installation. The greatest advantage of course is that using a solar powered security light reduces your energy bill.

Just compare it to the infamous gas lamp. Did you know that just 8 gas lamps kept on year round uses enough gas to heat the average home in winter?

Solar Powered Security Light – Good Places to Use It

In deciding on whether to get a solar powered security light, the first thing to think about is if you get enough sun in your area. Your area’s latitude may render the light virtually useless if it will only work during a couple of months of summer and intermittently (or not at all!) during winter.

If your latitude gets you enough sun, make sure that the specific location on your property gets sufficient rays as well. Popular places to use a solar powered security light are:

  • Patio, deck, or balcony
  • Entryway, front/back door
  • Walkway, driveway, carport
  • Roof
  • Backyard
  • Farm shed
  • Outdoor location where no electricity is available

Solar Powered Security Light – Motion Lighting

A solar powered security light with motion sensor is a great investment, especially if you want to conserve solar energy during non-summer months. Functioning just like a regular motion lamp, a solar motion lamp shines a bright light into the eyes of an intruder.

You can choose a lamp that allows you to customize how long you want it to shine after motion is detected (i.e., 10 sec. to 3 min.). Another consideration is the sensor’s distance capability, such as being able to detect an intruder a hundred feet away.

Choose a sensor that swivels so you can shorten the maximum distance. This is especially true if your property isn’t that deep and you want your lamp far enough from your house to make the additional lighting expense worth it. You don’t want the lamp shining in the eyes of every passerby.

Consider mounting solar powered security light with motion sensor atop a fence or gatepost or on a freestanding post on your lawn.

Many solar motion lamps come with a solar panel that you can install at a distance from the lamp itself (free cables are included). You can, for instance, install the solar panel on a sunlit wall several feet away from the solar batteries and motion lamp.
