The technology for home security surveillance cameras is so pervasive that most homeowners can afford a unit. Used for everything from monitoring a baby to guarding against intruders, there are many types of home security surveillance cameras.

Home Security Surveillance Cameras – CCTV

Closed circuit television systems are usually found in apartment buildings and mixed-use condominiums. CCTV home security surveillance cameras and equipment are often installed in these structures to:

1. Comply with insurance requirements
2. Identify strangers and visitors
3. Increase security in basement parking areas
4. Deter potential intruders
5. Capture/record evidence to deter fake accident claims

Home Security Surveillance Cameras – Web-Based

Internet-based home security surveillance cameras allow you to monitor what’s happening in your home from your cell phone and PDA. The even better news is that the cost is only $10 to $15 per month!

Of course, you’ll have to purchase the actual equipment and pay monthly Internet service fees (if you don’t already). But the expense may be worth it considering that you get real-time video via your chosen handheld device and even a text or e-mail message the second a device is triggered!

Here’s a rundown of what web-based home security surveillance cameras can cost you (may vary across providers):

1. Setup fee or starter kit (from $150 up), may include:
a. Home security surveillance cameras (may have built-in mic, motion sensor, audio sensor)
b. Cables
c. Software

2. Additional camera (from $30 up)

3. Sensors (from $20 up per unit)
a. Smoke detectors
b. Water sensors
c. Thermostats
d. Lamp modules
e. Freeze sensors

Home Security Surveillance Cameras – PC or Security Cams

If you’re home-based most of the time and don’t really need home security surveillance cameras with all the bells and whistles, you can just set up a regular PC or security camera to do the job.

This is a good option if all you want to do is monitor one or two areas in your home (e.g., front and back entrance or front door and nursery). Home security surveillance cameras cost as little as $14 each and Web cams cost much less.

Surveillance cameras mount on an outdoor wall or porch ceiling. If you use a Web cam, position it inside a fixed glass window, elevated, and pointed down at the desired angle.

Wireless home security surveillance cameras cost approximately $100 or more per unit. You can opt for a wireless handheld baby monitor with video (around $130 for one camera and one monitor). This can double as a front door surveillance device by simply placing it inside a window.
