Whether you have a little or a lot of water entering your basement, a residential basement waterproofing contractor can help you make things dry. When most people want to renovate their basement into usable space they start to look at the amount of water they may be getting in the basement and will contact a residential basement waterproofing contractor to stem the flow.

Most waterproofing efforts will involve removing the ground around the home checking the seal on the foundation’s blocks. Usually this is done one side of the house at a time and rarely will a residential basement waterproofing contractor open up two or more sides of the building’s basement walls at the same time. In addition to adding sealer to the blocks, they may also install drainage tile around the basement walls to help direct water from the home.

There may be many reasons for needing the services of a residential basement waterproofing contractor including the possibility the original builder failed to apply adequate sealer to the foundation blocks. There may have been a change in the area’s water table and more water is now flowing higher, or closer to the home and it could be that the waterproofing is old and needs done again.

Verify Credentials Before Letting Them Dig

When looking to hire a residential basement waterproofing contractor make sure they have a good reputation and all proper licensing for the state in which your home is located. When they dig around the home, it is always possible that power equipment being used could cause damage to the structure if used by an unqualified operator. They also need to know how much of what type of waterproofing to use on the foundation.

The residential basement waterproofing contractor may recommend adding drain tile to the trench dug around the building to carry excess water away to help prevent it from leaching through the foundation. The tile must be sloped properly and carry the water away from the building, or else it is possible more water could be brought towards the building and challenge the newly applied sealer.

If all efforts to keep water from the ground getting through the foundation, there are other possibilities of protecting the inside of the building’s foundation. Some residential basement waterproofing contractors offer systems for inside the basement to collect moisture after it gets into the basement and channel it into a proper drainage system. This can solve the moisture problem in the basement, but water is still getting through the block foundation and may cause structural problems over time. A combination of both methods may be needed in extreme cases.

Audiobook Review: The Sky's The Limit

Author Steven Gaines takes us from New York's most expensive condominiums and co-ops to the offices of its most powerful real estate brokers to reveal the outlandish displays of ego, bad behavior, and status hunger that come into play when the best addresses in the city are on the line.

With his signature elan, Gaines weaves a gossipy tapestry of brokers, buyers, co-op boards, and eccentric landlords and tells of the apartment hunting and renovating adventures of many celebrities - from Tommy Hilfiger to Donna Karan, from Jerry Seinfeld to Steven Spielberg, from Barbra Streisand to Madonna.

Here, too, is a fascinating chronicle of the changes in Manhattan's residential skyline, from the slums of the nineteenth century to the advent of the luxury building. Gaines describes how living in boxes stacked on boxes came to be seen as the ultimate in status, and how the co-operative apartment, originally conceived as a form of housing for the poor, came to be used as a legal means of blackballing undesirable neighbors.

A social history told through brick and mortar, The Sky's the Limit is the ultimate look inside one of the most exclusive and expensive enclaves in the world, and at the lengths to which people will go to get in.
